Language Disorder Vs. Language Difference

One of my biggest passions and one of the reasons I started Rockford Speech was my love of languages. When working with other languages, it’s very important to tease out the difference between a language disorder and a language difference.

A language disorder is when a child has difficulties acquiring their first language and a language difference is when a child has errors in their second language that are not present in the first language. I love working with bilingual or multilingual children to determine whether the child has a language disorder or whether they are simply learning another language. I also love working with parents on strategies to support their home language.

If you have questions or concerns about your child, feel free to reach out! I offer a complimentary first meeting for us to discuss any questions or concerns you may have before we begin working together.
